Eco-awareness in Mozambique
 
There are very few strong voices for the environment in Mozambique. As a pristine country, which is one of the poorest in the world, it is open to exploitation from every direction.  The main GDP contributor of Mozambique is still international aid. The government is having to take advantage of any opportunities without fully considering the long term environmental implications.

Problem
A number of businesses including oil, tourism and logging are taking advantage of this situation to extract what they need without doing so in a sustainable way.
Implication
This pristine environment simply won’t exist in its current state in the near future.
Need
To give the environment a bigger platform within and outside the country. There is a need to:
  1. ‣Involve & educate local people about threats to and appreciation of, their environment.
  2. ‣Expose and deter those acting in an unsustainable way.
  3. ‣Inform government and the public about threats to the environment.
  4. ‣Inform a wider audience (National and international) about threats to the environment.
Objectives
To create an environmental media/record of the pristine environment. Train media generators and facilitate production of all media forms, to increase the level of environmental awareness both within and outside the country.  There are two very clear areas to focus attention on at the moment.
  1. ‣Stop the exploitation of hydrocarbons in, or adjacent to, the Bazaruto National Park
  2. ‣Stop the uncontrolled plunder of African Hardwood forests
Achievements
20th August 2007
A 30 minute documentary ‘Net profit’ was shown on SABC, the South African national broadcaster.  This was a piece commissioned for 50/50 and focussed on the issues of SASOL doing seismic testing in the areas adjacent to the Bazaruto National Park.  Click here to see the trailer.
Campaign needs
Volunteers
  1. ‣Filming, editing or production experience who can work with locals to train and mentor.
  2. ‣3rd world Project management experience to manage a local team.
  3. ‣Eco-science experience to work with the filming teams and conduct research.
Equipment
  1. ‣Mini DV video cameras, lights, mic’s, underwater filming equipment
  2. ‣Access to a Rib, scuba equipment
  3. ‣A base to work from in Vilanculos

  1. ‣Equipment purchase and rental
  2. ‣Accommodation and premises
  3. ‣To support the team and the campaign
