The reasons given are that: it creates a jobs, fish stocks are low and seals eat fish. But the pup’s don’t eat the fish the parents do and the reason for a lack of fish is overfishing.
Once again the seals are being used as a scapegoat. There is no evidence to show that seals reduce fish populations in fact the there is evidence to show that seals actually help fish populations by eating the predatory fish.
One of Namibia's largest industries is tourism and at the moment most of the tourists don’t know what’s going on and are quite horrified when they find out. Click here to see. So, if the tourists stop coming to Namibia because of the killing of seals, what sort of effect will that have on the economy? Perhaps much more than the small number of jobs that are created. Additionally a number of international societies have offered to help fund alternative employment for the jobs lost if the culling will stop. Seal alert and Sea shepherd are trying to talk to the Namibian government to get the killing stopped.
We are trying to produce film and documentary material that will broadcast this atrocity to the world and help raise funds to support these organisations.
